The meteoric rise of video technology in the early 1980s was met with suspicion in some quarters. Pressure groups found certain videocassettes objectionable and ‘video nasties’ became a catch-all term for undesirable films or films potentially liable for prosecution under the Obscene Publications Act 1959.

This book is not a discussion of the video nasties themselves, but instead gives a detailed synopsis of each film, from Absurd to Zombie Flesh Eaters, without criticism or commentary — 75 video nasty plots without dissection. The book may be considered a nostalgic reverie for those fans and collectors who don’t have the fortitude to sit through these films again and would like an aide-memoire. What’s more, many of the films are cheap and exploitative, little masterclasses of cutting corners, and the brutal logic of their storylines when laid bare make for entertaining reading.

The material contained in LAST ORGY BY THE CEMETERY originally appeared in a different form in the authors’ See No Evil: Banned Films and Video Controversy,  published by Headpress in 2000 and now out of print.

OUR BOOK, SEE No Evil: Banned Films and Video Controversy (2000) has been updated and retitled Cannibal Error: Anti-Film Propaganda and the ‘Video Nasties’ Panic of the 1980s for its recent publication. One of the changes has been to the section of the book that looks in-depth at the so-called ‘video nasties’ — feature films of a horror nature released on videocassette in Great Britain in the early 1980s; pressure groups found these films objectionable and, in turn, the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP) considered them liable to prosecution under the Obscene Publications Act 1959. The synopses that accompanied our commentary on these films has, in Cannibal Error, been greatly reduced. However, we felt it was a shame to lose the original, lengthy synopses entirely. The book you are now reading may be considered a stand-alone publication or a supplement to Cannibal Error. There is no critique here — the synopses are stripped of context, production credits and cast names, and may be considered a nostalgic reverie for those who don’t have the fortitude to sit through the films again but would like an aide-memoire. Alternatively, many of the films are cheap and exploitative — masterclasses of cutting corners — and the brutal logic of their story-lines, when laid bare, makes for entertaining reading. […]
